Okay, so a few Arthurian novels have been published since I last did a search for them, which was back in the 1970s. To save me the trouble of weeding through all of them, could you folks recommend me your favorite novels, with your reasons for why you like them? (Online fic recommendations are welcome too, but take into account that I prefer stories that are novellas or novels.)

First, what I've already read, with my favorites asterisked. Read more... )

You'll gather from this that I prefer Dark Ages Arthurian novels, but I won't scorn a good High Middle Ages novel (*points at T. H. White*).

Yikes! I just joined. My name's Aerin, and although stories about King Arthur had sort of been around me when I was growing up, my interest didn't really kick up until I read The Once and Future King by TH White when I was in the seventh grade. Now I'm a senior in high school (graduating in two weeks!), but my interest in King Arthur waned a little. So I joined to kickstart the information I used to know!

Hey Everyone!

I'm new to this community, I found it via [livejournal.com profile] deludedvision's user info, via [livejournal.com profile] hogwarts_elite (so she doesn't think I'm stalking her)!

Arthurian Legend was my first passion/ obsession, etc. I was about 9 when I first read Nancy McKenzie's The Child Queen, and then I couldn't stop. When I think about it, I haven't read all that much -- I haven't read Morte de Arthur, or The Once and Future King (tried, but I thought it was horrible) and I'm sure a slew of others, but since those are the biggies I thought I'd mention them.

Um... I love Morgan le Fay, always have -- my last name is Morgan (though I wish it were my first and sometimes go by it) -- I even have the Morgan le Fay/ Merlin Barbies, AND spent like $200 on the Franklin Mint Morgan le Fay doll (she's georgeous by the way).

And yea, I guess that's all of my introduction!

Hey, I'm new to the community. My name's David Driggers and I live in Tampa, FL. Go into Arthurian Legend about 2 or so years ago when I first read "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White. Just couldn't put the thing down! Since then, I've read the book a number of times over again and read up on all I could find about the legend of Arthur and Merlin. Anyways, does anyone here know of a good textbook on learning middle-english? I'd love to read Morte d'Arthur in it's original text.

Hi, My name's Liz- I just joined. I've had such fun reading this community's posts! I'm fairly new to Arthurian Legends, but I'm really liking them so far. I'm almost finished reading The Once And Future King, and The Mists Of Avalon- and I really love both of them. They're such an amusing contrast- The Mists of Avalon (as you all know) is serious, for the most part, and I really enjoy the light humor in The Once and Future King. I enjoy the writing styles of both authors.

Now about me a little: I'm a high school Freshman (yes, I'm young), and I love reading and writing. I hope to eventually be a College Professor or a Fantasy author (or both). Nice to meet you all :)!

Greetings!

I just found this community and I think it's really snazzy!

I just read The Mysts of Avalon, and I'm on a new book Mad Merlin by J. Robert King if any of you have read it. It's part of a trilogy, the next book being Lancelot du Lethe followed by Morgan le Fay. Merlin is a really unusual book, treating Merlin like a fallen god. I read Mort D'Arthur long long ago as a little kid and loved it to pieces. I also have The Once and Future King but for somereason I never got around to finishing it.

That which I love most about Arthurian legend is that it is so "changeable," hearing the story from many different sides. The pagan side, the Christian side, the French way versus the Irish/British/Welsh ways. I think it's totally awesome.

I love Medieval history and culture, (yes, I get the "Renaissance" magazine, and it is HIGHLY recommended), Celtic history and mythology and lots of other really dorky things. It's my dream to some day learn Gaelic. (Just a side not really.)

My favorite Arthurian character would have to be Lancelot. I love the connection to the Lady of the Lake, and his connection to Arthur, and the triangle circling around Guenivere. (And something about a romantic, tall dark and handsome (usually, I know.) knight just does it for me...)

My favorite story would have to be when young Lancelot wants to go to Camelot. When he grows up and goes to leave, the Lady gives him a ring that can change his armor from white(?) to black to green with a twist around the finger. The first time at Arthur's tourney's, Lancelot uses the ring, and rakes in 1st 2nd and 3rd prizes as White, Black and Green knight.

I don't know anywhere near as much as I would like, would love to know how to find out more, and would love to know how to get another copy of Le Mort because mine was an old hand-me-down from my mother.

So. Might I join your coven cult league? ;)

(Yes. Abounding with enthusiasm!)

Salvete!

Me stuff:Salve! My name is Amea (as you can see) and I am an anglophile with a particularly Arthurian bend. ^_^ You can also see that if you check out my LJ; hee, it’s rather Guenever-themed at the moment. Er, classic Guenever... as opposed to MZB Gwenhwyfar. I also have all the "Days of Camelot" posters in my bedroom and all kinds of other strange Arthurian possessions. I was fortunate to attend a high school where chivalry was still in vogue and it has impacted me gurtly for the better!

Lit stuff:Some of my favorite Arthurian tellings/retelling are the classics done by Tennyson, Chretchien de Troyes, and, of course, Malory, but I really have enjoyed some of the more modern ones as well. My personal favorite is Stephen Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle (or at least the first three of them) because he blends the historical and legendary characteristics so well! He also has a modern story about Arthur’s return that is nothing if not interesting. I also have to profess a certain fondness for Roger Lancelyn Green’s King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. It’s a really basic book, but it was my first dog-eared Arthurian compilation, so I love it. I also unfortunately have a particular dislike for The Mists of Avalon – I’m probably alone, there! I’m also currently reading TH White’s The Once and Future King, which I am enjoying. Neandrethal!Lance is a nice change from the empty stuffed-shirt that seems so prevalet. ^_^

Write Stuff:I also have dabbled in writing King Arthuresque short stories and midrashes, and am currently working on a full-length novel. Trouble is, I’ve been reading so much of the newer lit that makes Arthur look so weak that I’m having trouble painting him as a hero! I need to go back and read the Old School again to get me all excited. I have also done a rather large and tedious research paper on the Historical Evolution of Guenevere for school, and really hope to go on to study Arthurian legend in depth in college and grad school. I’m going to be going to Wheaton College next year to major in English with an emphasis on Medieval British Literature, so, er, I can have a useful degree?

Anyhoo, that’s my rather large How I Have Liked Arthur, and I suppose my Why I Would Like Arthur entails a lot of things about archetypes and hero stories and the wonderful sense of dependable glory that one gets while reading them. I think it awakens in all of us the desire to do something greater than ourselves.

Backtracking Stuff: Anyway, so, hello! I’m sorry if any of you actually read all that. ^^;; Other than that, I guess I really haven’t much to say, so, er, hi. ^^;;

Oh, yes! A friend of mine just reminded me – silly her – that she is starting up a King Arthur RPG on LiveJournal and she still needs a lot o’ characters. ^_^ You’ll have to excuse the plug; if you want more info, just check out the community page.

Thank 'Ee: Thanks for making this beautiful community, ! **hugs**

Whoa! I've been looking for an Arthurian legend community forever... This is awesome. I know it's small at the moment... er, I can try to spread the word about it if you'd like.

Anyways... just felt like saying hi and expressing my ecstaticness upon finding that this community exists.

Since I'm here, I guess I'll share some of my favorite books about King Arthur... just cuz I'm in school and I'm bored. :-P

The Once and Future King - T.H. White
Le Morte D'Arthur - Sir Thomas Mallory
The Mists of Avalon - Marion Zimmer Bradley
The Warlord Chronicles - a trilogy by Bernard Cornwell
The Camulod Chronicles - a series by Jack Whyte (I've only read the first four or so)

Erm, yeah... I'm sure you've heard of the first few. Has anyone else read the series, or know of any other good series?

Bleh... I'm sure I have some other favorites too. I just can't think of them at the moment.

Alright, I'll shut up now.

Later.
